Print Industry Calls it Quits Days Before iPad Takeover

Print Industry Calls it Quits Days Before iPad Takeover

We surrender! CEOs come out with their hands up. Three days before the launch of Apple's iPad, positive reviews are pouring in, and the printing industry has officially decided to concede defeat. “Yup,” R.G. Blau, acting president of the International Conventicle of Print Industry Types confirmed the rumors early today. “With the iPad, we feel that Apple has once and for all proven that there is no longer any need whatsoever for books, newspapers, magazines, catalogues, posters, billboards, banners, brochures, or anything of that other stuff that we print.” “It's a sad day for the printing industry, but we also feel some measure of pride at having been defeated by such a worthy competitor,” Hotcards blogger Anne Stewart said at a press conference this morning. “I, for one, welcome our new digital advertising overlords.” Starting today, April 1st, newspapers and other publishers will begin to close up shop, followed by printing technology providers from Xerox to Heidelberg, and finally, small […]

Recession-Conscious Postcard Printing

Recession-Conscious Postcard Printing

Share space, save money! When business is slow, owners and managers are faced with an inevitable quandary: They should advertise to pique consumer interest, but how can they afford to when business is slow? Luckily, at Hotcards, we're kind of experts on low cost printing. Why? Because it doesn't matter how good the economy is or how great business is going, print buyers always want an unbeatable price – especially in the era of gang-run, go-digital-or-go-home, web-to-print mania. So what's to be done when even the $108.00 price tag on a run of 1000 postcards sounds way over-budget? Cut the cost in half by sharing the card with another business! Over the last year, many small businesses have been combining forces and sharing ad space. Because two-sided, full color postcard printing is the norm, it's easy to design a mailer or club card with a unique ad on each side. Take, for example, this card, advertising vegetarian dining in Barcelona, […]

Printing for the Real Estate Industry

Printing for the Real Estate Industry

A nice shout out. Priorities sometimes change during a recession. A business philosophy can start to take hold that says: people aren't buying, therefore customer service is no longer priority number 1. But an experience we had this week at Hotcards proves that there's still a lot of positive energy and great business being done out there. Recently, we printed 8000 postcards for OlsenZiegler Realty, as part of a direct mail real estate postcard campaign. It was our second time printer for Cleveland-based OlsenZiegler, and Chris Olsen was so pleased with our service that he posted a very nice blog about Hotcards on ActiveRain, a busy online real estate network. In Olsen's words: “I have done a lot of comparisons of direct mail full-color printers over the years and I have found this company so far to be the best in terms of price and turnaround… I highly recommend HotCards.com and hope you are as happy with their cost, service, […]

Print Promotions For Halloween

Print Promotions For Halloween

A pocket of consumer enthusiasm in a slow economy. What's your favorite thing about Halloween? No! Don't tell me! Is it dressing up? Making a cool costume? Carving pumpkins? Going to a great party? Or maybe taking the kids out trick or treating? Whatever you love best about Halloween, you're in luck. Even in the midst of our sluggish economy, everybody's ready to have a great time this season. Which means all you businesses out there have got to get a move on those Halloween print promotions. Restaurants, bars, or other venues planning parties should already be printing invitations, posters, jumbo postcard mailers, and on-site signage for the big event. People start planning what they're going to do with their spooky night (and weekend) weeks ahead of time, so if you want you're event on the calendar, advertising starts last week! Event caterers and event planners should also be busy printing business cards, brochures, and flyers advertising their Halloween-related services. […]

Direct Mail Printing Appeals to Recession-Conscious Consumers

Direct Mail Printing Appeals to Recession-Conscious Consumers

And it's not bad for tight ad budgets, either! I've had direct mail on the brain lately. First, it made my advertising/branding trends to watch list for 2008, THEN I listed it as a great way for designers to self-promote during this recession. But I only just realized why the topic keeps coming up – because we've seen a rise in direct mail marketing in recent months. At a time when budgets are tight, direct mail is one of the most effective and economical forms of print advertisement. For advertisers, AND for consumers. I'll be the first to admit that direct mail printing can be perceived as 'junk mail' at times. But not when people are watching their bank accounts, and looking for savings. For consumers, a piece of direct mail is now an opportunity to find out about sales and special pricing, and to cut coupons, of course. In the words of print marketing expert Margie Dana, “In direct […]

2008 Branding and Marketing Trends

2008 Branding and Marketing Trends

What worked last year, and what will work in 2009. Often, commercial printing involves being part of a large-scale branding effort. Our print design and web design departments also need to stay up to date on the latest trends. So when Advertising Age came out with its list of brand winners from 2008, it seemed like the perfect time to do a little trend tracking… Balanced Ad Channels One thing that really stood out for me was the balance popular brands seem to be maintaining between different forms of advertisement. TV commercials are almost always accompanied by outdoor print buys, while direct mail printing channels consumer attention towards a website with games or video to created extended brand engagement. Brand Activism The biggest trend, in print, online, and on the air over the last year seems to have been brand activism. Companies as diverse as Jim Beam, American Express, and Haagen-Dazs launched campaigns to raise brand appeal and awareness through […]

Printing for Enviro-Conscious Events

Printing for Enviro-Conscious Events

Strategies for leaving a light advertising footprint On my way to acquiring my morning coffee today, I came across an interesting poster. In fact, I came across it several times, on every telephone pole lining my street. The poster advertises a series of events protesting the logging of old-growth forests. At Hotcards, we're extremely aware of the problem of old-growth logging, which is why we use only paper that has been milled from trees grown on a tree farm. However, the unfortunate truth is that not all printers are committed to using only farmed trees. As I looked at these posters, I began to wonder, doesn't printing hundreds or thousands of giant, full color posters kind of defeat the purpose for which the poster was printed, that is, to fight against cutting trees down? This might seem like a crazy thing for a printer to point out. After all, I depend on your interest in full color printing for my […]

Print Advertising on Video

Print Advertising on Video

Make a powerful visual statement, again and again. The future of advertising may be online, but that doesn't mean the end for print advertising. In fact, it just means that print campaigns will be able to reach that many more viewers! It's unfortunate that some forms of print media have suffered due to the advent of, most recently, online advertising. Print advertising designers have also felt the shift as more money has gone into advertising online and smaller percentages of ad budgets have been allocated to advertising in newspapers and magazines. Poster, flyer, brochure, banner, and postcard printing – just a few of our specialties here at Hotcards – have, fortunately, experienced no such slippage. In fact, video advertising just added to print advertising's visibility. Today, a print design is seen not only in the locations where it is placed for promotional purposes, it's also reproduced over and over again in video – if advertisers know what they're doing, that […]

Campaign for Congress with Print Advertising

Campaign for Congress with Print Advertising

Don't wait for a website to launch, start print campaigning now! Something tells me the first President of the U.S. didn't have to deal with the pressures of running campaign websites and managing shoestring budgets, but today, anyone who dreams of someday having their heads carved in granite has to find a way to go big on a small budget. Most of the time, when you hear or read about the '08 elections race, the focus is on the presidential primary candidates: THEIR print designs, THEIR poster printing, THEIR websites. Here at Hotcards, we're as guilty of this focus as anyone. But we're doing more than just electing a new President in '08, we may very well see a lot of change across the board in Congress, and that means a lot of hopefuls are hitting the dusty congressional elections campaign trail right about now. It's all well and good to observe the print design and advertising trends of the […]
