Writers Strikewatch – Day 2

Writers Strikewatch – Day 2

Union printing hits and misses on the WGA strikeline. On the second day of the WGA strike, the issue of visibility is becoming central to strike politics, and that means the demand for fast, high quality union printing is enormous. The Writers Guild of America is not a huge union – with approximately 12, 000 members – and this shows at strike locations across the country where, at some times of day, little more than a dozen writers are walking the picket lines. In the media, many observers are wondering how much impact 'pencils down' is actually going to have, and the small numbers at picket locations, particularly on the west coast, may be adding fuel to the fire. There are only a few videos showing footage of strikers up online at this point, but the overall impression is of something that is growing. Critics should wait and see what happens in the coming days before calling the game. One […]

Printing for Enviro-Conscious Events

Printing for Enviro-Conscious Events

Strategies for leaving a light advertising footprint On my way to acquiring my morning coffee today, I came across an interesting poster. In fact, I came across it several times, on every telephone pole lining my street. The poster advertises a series of events protesting the logging of old-growth forests. At Hotcards, we're extremely aware of the problem of old-growth logging, which is why we use only paper that has been milled from trees grown on a tree farm. However, the unfortunate truth is that not all printers are committed to using only farmed trees. As I looked at these posters, I began to wonder, doesn't printing hundreds or thousands of giant, full color posters kind of defeat the purpose for which the poster was printed, that is, to fight against cutting trees down? This might seem like a crazy thing for a printer to point out. After all, I depend on your interest in full color printing for my […]

Election Campaign Sign Printing Snags Voter Enthusiasm

Election Campaign Sign Printing Snags Voter Enthusiasm

Print advertising is key for campaigns that want to connect with voters Online campaigning is a great way to raise money, but when it comes to winning votes, signs, stickers, palm cards, and direct mail printing remain the best way to connect. I was reading the Huff Post today, and I came across a lovely article by Herself on Democratic candidates using various incidents in which they were the victims of slander to raise major campaign moola. Huffington dissects the phenomenon with typical alliterative flair, and pinpoints its genesis, rightly, I think, with Ann Coulter's multiple, poorly thought out insults directed at John Edwards. According to Huffington, the Edwards campaign raised over $300,000 in sympathy money thanks to these insults. The funds were solicited entirely by mass emailing encouraging supporters to help Edwards “fight back” by donating money. In the coming weeks, similar email notifications from the Clinton camp encouraged supporters to help Hillary fight back against reporters making fun […]

Hot on the Campaign Printing Trail

Hot on the Campaign Printing Trail

Election campaign printing is on the rise even as summer heats things up… We're getting close to the middle of this hot, rainy summer season. If we were kids, we'd probably all be lazing around in the backyard, haunting friend's pools or the mall to beat the humidity. But now that we're all grown up, every summer we get to relearn the tough lesson that business doesn't stop for the heat! Things are unbelievably bumpin' around here at Hotcards. In fact, many of our locations are busier than ever with all the orders flooding in from election campaign customers in need of poster printing, palm card printing, flyer printing, and just about every other type of political campaign printing you can imagine. Instead of being a season of “campaign fatigue,” as some pundits predicted, this summer has found candidates for the White House and for Congress taking their games through the roof. On the Democrat side, everybody seems to be […]
