…and other urban legends… It was the best of times to be in marketing, it was the worst of times to be marketing… Or at least, that's how I imagine Charles Dickens might have started A Tale of Two Cities if he was writing it today. The paradox is true. It's a tough time to sell marketing services – everyone's looking for an expert, while the terrible reality is that trends are shifting too quickly for true expertise to exist. On the other hand, there's never been a better time to be “mad men” because there are no limits, no boundaries, no set of rules to follow anymore. At a time like this, a commodity like certainty is worth its weight in gold. A “marketing expert” who can guarantee a campaign's success will go far, until, that is, it becomes clear that – just as you suspected – there are no guarantees when it comes to promotion and advertising. Unlike […]

10 signs that you might need a new one. Business card printing is an investment, which means that you must be anticipating a return. But for some reason, you're not making new connections. People just aren't following up. Here are the top ten reasons why your business card isn't doing its job. 10. You don't have a business card. “I had something designed, really I did. I even found a printer! I just…got busy, or something…” 9. That thing you give out? It's not actually a business card. “It was the day before the conference! I panicked and wrote my name on a bunch of playing cards/matchbooks/post-it notes.” 8. It has your pager number on it. “So what if I've been using this card since 1995? All my information is still basically the same…” 7. It's shaped like a star, a heart, or a turtle. “I wanted to stand out from the crowd! Sure, it doesn't fit in your wallet, […]
A pocket of consumer enthusiasm in a slow economy. What's your favorite thing about Halloween? No! Don't tell me! Is it dressing up? Making a cool costume? Carving pumpkins? Going to a great party? Or maybe taking the kids out trick or treating? Whatever you love best about Halloween, you're in luck. Even in the midst of our sluggish economy, everybody's ready to have a great time this season. Which means all you businesses out there have got to get a move on those Halloween print promotions. Restaurants, bars, or other venues planning parties should already be printing invitations, posters, jumbo postcard mailers, and on-site signage for the big event. People start planning what they're going to do with their spooky night (and weekend) weeks ahead of time, so if you want you're event on the calendar, advertising starts last week! Event caterers and event planners should also be busy printing business cards, brochures, and flyers advertising their Halloween-related services. […]
1-5 After a heyday that seemed like it would never end, the tech industry is finally suffering. I'm not trying to rub it in, it's just a fact that layoffs are happening, startups are faltering, and designers and developers are having to look for work where work once came looking for them. Depressing as this sounds, there's really no better time to look to the future in a positive way. Be light on your feet, try new things, get out of the box and don't be afraid to experiment. In search of sustenance, many techie creatives are beginning to look away from the computer and towards the big old world outside. After all, when emailing, Twittering, and all-round internet living fails, the best thing you can do is get out there and start networking offline. With this in mind, Hotcards presents 10 ways you can use low cost printing to fuel your next big career step: 1. Print New Business […]
Badass printing inspiration. It's not often that I come across business card printing that really catches my eye. Maybe it's because all those online galleries that constantly show up on my favorite news sites like somehow I might be able to eat them for breakfast have put me into business card overload…but I'm not trying to point any fingers. The point this Monday morning is to bring you a little innovative design inspiration courtesy of artist Evan Roth. Check out his cool new business card! Points for nice integration of web design and print design, and for functionality, and for SEO. All you have to do is Google the words in the business card search tab to get to Roth's blog. Never mind what those words might be, as this is a corporate blog and our official position is that we absolutely do not approve of that kind of language in business card printing. No siree.
Two words: Slick. Very. Business cards are great for business-y types, but what about the average person that's constantly writing their info down on napkins, receipts, and cell phones already crammed with names and numbers? Networking is all-important, but if you don't want or need a business card, how are you supposed to stand out and really make a connection? That's where calling card printing comes in. Not only is it ultra-stylish, it's cheap, and anyone can do it. Professional printing services aren't just for big companies anymore. Calling cards were originally popular during the 17th century. Because there was zero communications technology back then, people would ask if they could stop in for a visit by leaving a calling or visiting card at your door. To show that you were open to a visit, you would, in turn, drop your card off at your friend's place. It was the rough equivalent of really, really slow text messaging. Unlike texting, […]
Not actually run by gangs. There's a new Design Idea of the Week up, and it's all about how businesses can collaborate on print advertising in order to build a sense of community. Products like multi-ad door hangers and postcards are great community-building tools, and by advertising collaboratively, businesses enjoy a very, very low bottom line. What you probably didn't know is that if you print with Hotcards, you're already getting super low prices thanks to membership in a community: the gang-run printing community. That's right. You're in a gang and you didn't even know it! But don't worry, this gang isn't about any of that crazy 'blood in, blood out' stuff. And 'gang-run printing' doesn't refer to printing run by gangs. In fact, it's more about saving money, and doing something good for the environment. One of the first steps in any offset printing job is to make plates, which are impressions on aluminum sheets of the images to […]
It's simple. One of the new design interns at Hotcards created this video about printing business cards, and I thought it was so great that it deserved a spot up here on the blog. Enjoy!
