Celebrity Christmas Cards 2008
Design decisions of the rich and famous.
Over the last couple of months, we've been doing just a little, tiny bit of greeting card printing. Businesses, charities, and even the occasional family send out, oh, bazillions of cards during the holiday season, some designed by spirited individuals, some carefully assembled by crack design teams.
But, of course, the most important cards sent out every year are those sent by celebrities. In 2007, we showcased the best, and the worst, of celebrity greeting card printing, and it was such a hit we're doing it again in 2008.
Martha Stewart sent out a classically elegant card this year. The photo was taken by Herself of a corner of her farmland property. Perfect example of how you can do everything perfectly, and still come across as not really having a personality.
The President also chose an image seen from a window of the White House as the perfect seasonal message. The whole gazing-out-the-window-at-my-domain shot was very popular this year in greeting card print and design.
Last year, everybody made a big deal about Katie Holmes designing the Cruise family holiday card, so predictably, this year, she was at it again. Unfortunately, Katie seems to be suffering from a bit of stage fright, as her new design isn't just safe, it's brutally boring. Again, where's the personality?
Fortunately, not everyone opted for a deathly boring greeting card this year. As he did in 2007, Paul Reubens (better known as Pee Wee Herman), went for a completely nutzo card design. Check out the family photo in the background. And is that Reuben's mom, watching us on TV? Very kitschy. I have to admit that I'm impressed with the minutely orchestrated mise-en-scene.
Those applying a green philosophy to the holiday season sent e-cards this year, or were encouraged by sites like Treehugger to recycle old cards. Comedy Central managed to come up with a design that made us laugh AND think green.
Unfortunately, I suspect that this is fresh greeting card printing masquerading as recycled design. For shame!
The award for the scariest greeting card printing this Christmas goes to heavy metal heroes Megadeth. Yup, that's right, Megadeth sends out a cheery holiday greeting – the best of a card design contest run on their website. Who woulda thought?
What are your favorite celebrity holiday cards this season? Or better yet, did you design your own? Post about 'em here in our comment thread. After all, a successful Christmas is all about good design. Just ask Hugh Hefner.
